I live in an area, though it votes liberal, is still 55% Catholic.
As part of my job, I have the privilege of taking visiting clients out to dinner.
My favorite restaurant has been advised there are certain things the wait staff should never say when they see me two evenings in a row.
Comments like…”Wow you must love this place”…or “Didn’t I see you last night?”…are embarrassing, as they have the potential to make my client feel guilty, as they realize I’m away from family again because of them.
Hospitality is my job…I’m glad to do it.
Even so, mistakes like that, which a wait person might make, are hardly malicious, so even when it does occur, I don’t lose my cool.
On the other hand, if I went to this same restaurant with a valued customer and together we witnessed “art work” on the pathway leading in that included a Crucifix hanging in a giant bottle of urine, or a statue of the Virgin Mother covered with dung, we’d both be humiliated and I’d never patronize the place again…ever.
Regarding a web site I frequent, called the Drudge Report, I thought founder Matt Drudge had a better understanding of who his patrons were.
Conservatives like me enjoy dining on news stories that advance the cause of traditional values.
For years Mr. Drudge seemed to respect that.
Until this past weekend when he crossed the line.
You see, I was deeply offended by Matt’s insistence on displaying a photograph I considered to be pornographic.
Just like that weird art, which may not be offensive to some, what I consider pornographic others may not…but that’s not my problem…how I feel about it is what must control my decisions, otherwise I’ll have no self-respect.
I don’t need to ask others if they agree either, I’ve been a practicing Christian long enough to know what conflicts with my community’s appetite for news.
I’m sad to say goodbye, as I loved my experience on Drudge…but it’s over for me…as he betrayed a sacred trust.
If you’re looking for an alternative news source please consider a site called http://www.Pewsitter.com
It’s a Christ centered wall, that even allows you to become part of the team, by accepting your application to be a “news clipper” who can submit articles for consideration with an easy to use program they will email to you to download.
I think you’ll be impressed.
Listen, it won’t be easy to go cold turkey on Drudge, but remember Lot’s wife…she looked back and became a pillar of salt.
I John 2:15-17
Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father is not in them. For everything in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—comes not from the Father but from the world. The world and its desires pass away, but whoever does the will of God lives forever.
