Life of Pi Movie Review an Easter Story

March 31, 2013

If you’ve ever been a Lector (designated reader) in the Catholic Church, you know there are times one must seek the Priest and ask which reading he prefers recited during Mass.

In today’s Easter Sunday lectern for example, regarding the Gospel, there’s the option of telling the Resurrection story from the perspective of Luke, or from that of John; and even the choice of a Resurrected Christ walking with Disciples on the road to Emmaus. (Only the Priest or Deacon read the Gospel)

The end result of Christ rising is the same, but the narratives, as retold by the two different Evangelists, have varying emphasis’.

Last evening we watched the movie Life of Pi.

It’s rare that a movie can hold the solid interests of me, my wife, and our “20 something” son, without once offending.

I highly recommend this movie as a family film for children 11-12 and up.

There are no sex-scenes, no gore, (some animal deaths are sad, but the directors kept it tasteful) and no foul language.

To call this movie a promotion of the Gospel is not impossible to do. (One can hardly expect Hollywood to consider that their mission.)

What I witnessed was that both Truth and miracles have a way of helping us deal with defeat and sin.

Christ’s message to the Apostles, soon after His Resurrection, is that everything which transpired in the Old Testament, leading up to the New Covenant, happened for a reason.

In Pi’s tale to the novelist, he retells a story of his childhood spiritual struggles, leading up to an adventure that was so good, it resulted in an Oscar for Best Director.

Considering that the movie Lincoln was almost as good, but force-fed viewers a pathetic diet of Mr. Spielberg’s politics, (running down Conservative Republicans, while flying “air-cover” over slave-owning Democrats) I give the Academy two thumbs up for selecting Life of Pi as this year’s winner for Best Director.

Sometimes they get their stories wrong, but this time they got it right.

Watch this movie like you’re watching a Bengal Tiger in a cage; with you as the Lion-tamer.

It may even help you overcome a few childhood indiscretions; much like Christ and His promise that wipes them all away.

Holy Saturday and the Holocaust

March 30, 2013

If you’ve ever been to the Easter Vigil Mass, you know the readings are much longer than normal.

The purpose is to reinforce the Truth that Jesus fulfills Old Testament prophecies of a pending lamb to be slaughtered for the sake of mankind.

Genesis 22:2, God speaking to Abraham.

“Take your son Isaac, your only one, whom you love,
and go to the land of Moriah.
There you shall offer him up as a holocaust
on a height that I will point out to you.”

Interestingly, several translations of the Bible use the term “holocaust” in place of the more popular “burnt offering.”

Either way, the meaning is the same.

I remember as a young child, being a bit impatient with the length of the Easter Vigils that my parents brought me to.

I’m going to ask you to sit through something, diametrically opposed to the good news of Easter.

It’s an interview of a Planned Parenthood spokeswoman trying to explain, or rather, not answer truthfully, about the organizations position on a botched abortion and a child struggling to live.

You’ll be sixty seconds into this before you start squirming in your seat.

I guarantee it.

For the sake of knowing your enemy, please listen through to the end.

Christ was on the Cross three hours…you can stomach six minutes of torture.

Ask Not What Your Pope Can Do For You

March 29, 2013

I’d like to thank New England Newspapers for the commemorative Pope Francis insert that appeared rolled up inside my Friday Berkshire Eagle this morning.

It was a pleasant surprise.

All of us, conservatives and liberals, and those who might think they’re halfway between, want something from the new Pontiff.

I confess, I want more of what Jorge Maria Bergoglio has already tried to champion.

More Truth about the evils of abortion.

More courage to defend the sanctity of marriage.

More lessons on personal charity for the poor.

What’s so ironic, liberals are on the same track, yet they’re traveling in the opposite direction.

Here’s what I mean.

They want more lies about the evils of abortion.

They want no defense of the sanctity of marriage.

They want governments to impose more taxes to help the poor.

It’s incumbent upon all of us, especially conservatives, to be like little Popes Francis to those with whom we interact.

I cannot speak for the enemies of the Church, but I can assure you, I see what they see.

As nice as that pamphlet was that New England Newspapers delivered to my home, they left out the tough talk words of Francis in his battle against Abortion and Gay Marriage in his native Argentina.

Here’s the bottom line.

This man is far too big for the enemy to take down.

The new Pontiff’s splash into the world was like the cannonball at a party that doused every kid within 10 feet of the pool’s edge.

What the Church’s enemies now must do is overstate his stance on poverty, hoping to distract and minimize the Evil One’s stronghold on those who embrace his liberal agenda.

Satan knows he must give up some ground here; but it won’t be without a fight.

Watch and pray that we don’t let him retake that ground he recently lost.

The Pope’s first words to us were; “Pray for me.”

Let’s ask God to show us what we can do for our Pope.

Don’t Mess with the Sheriff

March 28, 2013

From the news site called Washington Secrets;

Supporters of the 380 sheriffs in 15 states who so far have vowed to defy new state and federal gun control laws claim that legislation is starting to pop up around the nation to fire any state elected or appointed law enforcement official who doesn’t obey federal orders.

The first effort emerged in Texas. Legislation proposed by Dallas Democratic Rep. Yvonne Davis would remove any sheriff or law enforcement officer who refuses to enforce state or federal laws.

What’s more, it would remove any elected or appointed law enforcement officer for simply stating or signing any document stating that they will not obey federal orders.

What dear Miss Yvonne has yet to consider in her one-size fits all argument, is that if this law passes, it might also be used to remove both President Obama and Attorney General Eric Holder, for defying the same federal gun laws with their ridiculous Fast and Furious scheme, selling guns to drug runners.

I almost think that might be a trade worth making; 380 for 2.

The crime of the latter seems to be one that would produce a far longer sentence, and every one of those 380 sheriffs would get re-elected in a Mayberry minute.

Speaking of Mayberry, watch what happens when a different loud mouth Lebanese (besides me) tries to manipulate Sheriff Andy Taylor.

This could be you some day Yvonne.

The Right to Marry Whomever We Love

March 27, 2013

I love my sons.

May I please marry one of them?

I love my daughter.

May I please marry her?

I love my sister.

May I please marry her?

I love my brother.

May I please marry him?

I loved my mother.

Why was I not allowed to marry her?

I loved my father.

Why was I not allowed to marry him?

I loved my grandmothers.

Why was I not allowed to marry either of them?

I loved my grandfathers.

One had died before I was born, but why was I not allowed to marry the other?

Well?

…I’m waiting?

Huh?

No answer?

That’s odd.

Some say the definition of marriage over the last 6,000 years needs to change.

Some say history will be on the side of those who want to marry whomever they want.

After my father died, me marrying my mother would have provided her the additional social security benefits she deserved, and from the person in the world she loved most, but our hateful government wouldn’t allow it; how unethical.

Why would anyone insist–especially the Supreme Court–that any Government has the power to deny any American the right to marry whomever he or she loves?

How could a marriage to my son, or daughter, or brother, or sister, or mother, or father, or grandmother, or grandfather, be forbidden?

It’s just plain bigotry, that’s what it is.

Sigh…

All kidding aside folks; there’s plenty of precedent set for the government’s ability to define marriage.

Pope Francis was right…the Father of Lies is behind this.

Down Syndrome Perspective You’ve Never Heard

March 26, 2013

Sometimes I read things so good, I say to myself, “no blog today,” other than an introduction to someone else’s ability to share their revelation.

This is one of those times.

An amazing letter to the editor (in its entirety below) appeared today in our beloved Berkshire Eagle.

Good job Gabriel.

Like a warrior Angel, you’ve slayed ten thousand dragons with your sword of Truth.

I was quite glad to read in Saturday’s Eagle the article “North Dakota close to OK for the most restrictive abortion law in U.S.” that North Dakota is taking the abortion problem seriously and taking measures to protect innocent babies from those who would want to harm them. The provision that made me the most glad, however, was the one that prevented abortion because of “fetal abnormalities” such as Down syndrome.

As a practicing Christian, my faith teaches me that God has a special love for those who are disadvantaged such as those who have “abnormalities” including Down syndrome.

Another reason I feel particularly passionate about this issue is that I have a personal stake in it. When I was inside my mother’s womb, the doctor who was caring for my mom believed I had Down syndrome and other pesky abnormalities, and wanted to abort me. My mom, however, realized that the person with abnormal thinking was the doctor who failed to realize that life, all life, is a gift from God, and therefore shouldn’t be terminated.

Finally, I would like to call attention to the Biblical parable of the sheep and the goats in the Gospel of Luke. Christ sent some people who were expecting to go to heaven (goats) to hell on the grounds that they failed to take care of the needy in their midst. He said that by failing to care for them, they failed to care for him.

At the Final Judgment, to those who do not value all human life, Christ will say something like, “Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil, for I had Down syndrome, and you did not try to save me but turned a blind eye when my persecutors condemned me to death.”

When the Beginning Loops Around We Know it’s the End

March 25, 2013

Whenever you’re watching a drama on T.V., or enjoying a Movie, you can almost always tell when it’s the end of the program.

A scene from the beginning usually comes back around, which works as a way to connect the story into a loop, providing closure.

As I watched last night’s airing of The Bible, on the History Channel, I couldn’t help but think about the lowliness of Peter (an uneducated fisherman, who refused to be Crucified right side up) and the honor Christ bestowed upon him, as it compared to the humility of Pope Francis (using public transportation instead of a limo, and treating the poor as if they were the rich).

There were many important scenes skipped in this television version of the Gospel–but–when Jesus told Peter that he was the rock upon which He would build His Church, I let out a rebel yell of approval.

I believe we can all agree that Christ never wanted 2,000 or so Christian denominations.

Christ and His Corporate Body are One–always have been–always will be.

Christ has never been divided.

Since Jesus Himself said, not even He knows when He shall return, only God the Father, it would be irresponsible of me to say, the end is here.

I see this Pope as one who will re-unite believers by the millions.

I sense something special about him.

Jesus said, no one knows the day or the hour of His return.

That’s clear to me.

What’s also clear is that this latest Pope reminds me an awful lot of the first one.

Pope Francis “Discriminated Against in Advance”

March 24, 2013

You know me by now.

Or…maybe not.

And what about Pope Francis?

Do you know much about him?

Let me fill you in.

I’m going to say this in my whisper voice: He’s a conservative.

Let’s cut to the chase.

The Bible says the wounds of a friend are greater than the kisses of an enemy.

Pope Francis loves sinners so much, he was willing to confront them as they tried to rewrite natural law–with those unnatural.

By telling the Truth, he served them the same way Jonah did when he told the people of Nineveh to repent and find salvation in God.

Isn’t eternal life in Glory what we all want?

Did not Jesus make the ultimate sacrifice to entitle every human being with the opportunity to avoid damnation?

Listen…I’m not Pope Francis…and I don’t have the Swiss Guard outside my house to defend me from irate heavy-weights with pitch forks and torches.

Remember, these are not my words.

Whisper voice again: I just took joy in republishing it.

Oops…I think I saw a Berkshire Eagle Editor click on my homepage.

Honey…we’re moving to Kansas, I posted comments by Pope Francis that most of Massachusetts won’t tolerate!

Wait a minute…what am I afraid of…I know better than anybody.

DEBATE IS NOT HATE

Below is an excerpt from an article in the L.A. Times, regarding the Pope’s attempt (while still Cardinal) to stop same-sex marriage in Argentina.

I love how the Times felt the need to explain the meaning of the term “Father of Lies;” maybe they worried some would think it was O.J. Simpson.

“The Argentine people will face a situation whose outcome can seriously harm the family,” he wrote to the four monasteries in Argentina. “At stake is the identity and survival of the family: father, mother and children. At stake are the lives of many children who will be discriminated against in advance, and deprived of their human development given by a father and a mother and willed by God. At stake is the total rejection of God’s law engraved in our hearts.”

He went on to describe it as a ” ‘move’ of the Father of Lies who seeks to confuse and deceive the children of God” and asked for lawmakers to “not act in error.” In the Bible, the Father of Lies is the devil.

The Two Shades of Gun Dealers

March 23, 2013

The news was so upsetting my wife wished I hadn’t told her.

In Brunswick, Georgia a 17-year-old boy, and a 14-year-old boy, allegedly shot and killed a 14-month-old baby boy, with a bullet to the face, while trying to mug his mother.

The shot fired does not appear to be accidental, but punishment meted out to the mom for not giving the two thugs money.

She claims to have been broke, yet they were “smart enough” to argue that babies were expensive and she was probably lying.

Though she begged them to spare her son, they doled out their threat of murder in cold blood.

She too was shot twice, but survived.

This story will not have the stamina of the Trayvon Martin killing.

For one thing, it’s the wrong shade of gray for liberals to seize upon, and even more so, because the gun being used was probably not legally purchased.

Liberals love to point out problems that law-abiding citizens may cause with their weapons; but run like hell from stories about thugs and gang-bangers who commit 1,000 times as many crimes with firearms.

There are two kinds of gun dealers out there; just like there are two kinds of drug dealers.

Here’s what the gun dealers look like; just in case you weren’t sure.

Gun Dealer

Gun Dealer

I’m confident you don’t need a visual of the two kinds of drug dealers…we’ve all seen them; one wears a white smock and stands behind a pharmacy counter answering your questions.

The other wears pants that hang below his assets, and stands beside a glossy black sedan with tricked out wheels, as his head darts back and forth looking for guys wearing blue shirts; from whom he needs to run like hell.

We don’t need any more gun laws.

What we do need is to start prosecuting and punishing the real gun abusers without bias and with truth as our guiding light.

Are you listening mainstream media and liberal judges?

There’s no gray area here…it’s black and white.

And one more thing…pray for Bill Cosby; he’s the only one with guts enough to tell this crowd it’s time to face the music; we don’t need any more dead babies in strollers.

How Many Bullets Do You Need?

March 22, 2013

Although this Federal law was updated in 1997, many of us were taught how it works and remember it well.

Individuals who met the necessary requirements could exclude up to $125,000 of capital gains (one time) on the sale of their personal residences. The exclusion was intended to stimulate the real estate market and reward homeowners for their purchase and subsequent sale.  (Investopedia)

Wondering what this has to do with the title of my post today?

Here’s the deal.

I love how liberals have decided to use the argument against larger gun clips and magazines by saying things like;

How many bullets do you need?

If you haven’t figured it out by now, I like to capitalize on just about everything, to further God’s kingdom and try to save souls–(from themselves mostly).

Today’s analogy is simple.

It will outrage more than a few.

In fact, controversy is the main reason why Jesus was killed after only three years of ministry.

Before He started teaching and healing, He was barely noticed, except for His birth.

After His first miracle, He was sought after by both those who adored Him and those who despised.

When confronting hypocrites, He enabled His Crucifixion to gather steam.

He even caused great angst within His circle of friends, by saying things about His future that made them crazy.

A litmus test of sorts.

Are you both vehemently hated and desperately loved?

Think about it.

O.K.–enough of that, here’s today’s bottom line.

If liberals want to limit the number of bullets we can own–I say–let’s make a deal.

From here on, just like the one-time capital gains exemption, let’s limit the number of abortions that a woman can have to just one.

I mean really…how many abortions do you need?

Once that exemption is used up, she can have no more, and if she gets pregnant again, and does not want to keep the baby, she must go full term, then give the child up for adoption.

I love solutions where both sides win a little–and–liberals love federal laws that limit things.

Now, before you go off and declare me a complicit child murderer, my idea is a spoof, meant to sound absolutely shocking to both sides…but, if it creates a healthy discussion and prevents even one infant from death, then my idiotic comments were worth writing. Remember, bloggers have a permanent exemption from making any earthly sense…Huh, that sounds like Someone else I know.
