The Cloud of Witnesses…on Facebook

Today’s first reading in our liturgy is one of my favorites, from Hebrews 12:

Since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses,
let us rid ourselves of every burden and sin that clings to us
and persevere in running the race that lies before us
while keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus,
the leader and perfecter of faith.

For those who think this has nothing to do with personal behavior, and the sins we commit are totally private, think again.

Most of us do our best not to wear our secret desires on our shirtsleeves.

And…if we do wear those sins proudly, chances are we don’t think they’re sins at all, which means there’s an even greater chance this blog is irrelevant.

Just like things we deliberately post on Facebook, to share with Friends, because we’re proud of them, every other thought, action and yes even sin, for which we’re not proud, is posted for a cloud of witnesses to see in Heaven the same way.

I like to think of those folks as my relatives and friends who’ve gone ahead, not judging me, but praying I’ll do better.

For those hoping it’s not true, that moms, dads, grandpas, and grandmas aren’t watching everything, all I can say is…treat your life like your Facebook account…be careful what you post.

Your Friends are watching.
