Battling Sin…Oh Mercy

One of the most important things a Christian must do in life is overcome sin.

As we age, like the elderly men preparing to stone the woman caught in adultery, we realize, especially when confronted by a Holy God, that our sins are far too real and numerous to count.

When we do evil in God’s sight, Scripture teaches throughout the Old and New Testaments, that God is watching.

Oops.

Here’s an excerpt from today’s liturgy, Hebrews 3, where the writer quotes God the Father in the Old Testament, then gives an admonition in his letter to the faithful.

They have always been of erring heart,
and they do not know my ways.’
As I swore in my wrath,
‘They shall not enter into my rest.’”

Take care, brothers and sisters,
that none of you may have an evil and unfaithful heart,
so as to forsake the living God.

It’s pretty clear we have to do something about the state we’re in.

Starting with the facts might help.

First off, all sin comes from darkness.

To overcome darkness we must find a source of light.

We ourselves are not a source of light, though, like a gas range, there’s a tiny pilot valve that needs to be ignited.

Fact two; the Lord Jesus is the light of the world.

We must trust Him to keep us far from sin…and when we fail…we must dust ourselves off and trust Him again to forgive.

That’s what we call the Mercy of God.

There’s no other way.
